The light in the midst of the dark

28th April 2020

Bernadette Waddelove, Student Support Officer

“I think it might be better if we postpone?” I tentatively asked. My scheduled talk responded in the affirmative, and so my last university talk, before COVID-19 took a grip of the nation, was cancelled. When I sent that message nine long weeks ago, universities were beginning to close for an early Easter but the scale of the lockdown and the massive change in life to come was still blissfully unapparent. A few weeks later the facts were obvious; we are going to be in this for some time.

Here at APS, we worked quickly to try and adapt. Students still need support, and it is of great importance to keep the pro-life flame burning in a time when everyone is stopping to re-evaluate quite what is the importance of life and to what extent should we protect it. Indeed, most of the news we look at these days is inherently life ethics questions. What cost is too much, what action is too little? To what extent should the elderly in care homes be protected, when should they be left to die? What are the long term effects, and what will this do to people’s lives? And, of course, why are we liberalising abortion in a time when we are fighting to protect as many lives as possible?

In response, APS has started a series of online talks to address the many issues that we, as pro-lifers, have to navigate in these tricky times but also more generally. For plague or no plague, we will always be fighting for the rights and lives of the unborn and most vulnerable in our society.

Last night our Communication Director, Emily Hawkins, ran our first online workshop entitled Answering Pro-Choice Questions. Over 50 people signed up for the event from all over the country (plus some international visitors too!), and we received fantastic and interesting questions that people wanted answers to. While we didn’t have time to respond to all of the questions, we look forward to returning to this topic in the near future (so keep your eyes peeled 👀) to address more of these important topics.

The demand for these workshops has been so great that we will be running more sessions at least fortnightly, but preferably weekly, to address all of these burning questions and topics. We have speakers lined up to give talks on DNR orders and euthanasia. Keep an eye on our website and Facebook page, we will be releasing more information shortly! Have a topic that you want to be covered? Just let us know.

Let us use our time in lockdown to learn how to better defend the unborn and vulnerable – or to coin a well-worn phrase, let us stay at home and learn how to protect and save lives.
