Start a Society
APS is here to help your new pro-life society. We can offer you one-to-one ongoing support. Get in touch with our student support officer to see what we can offer you.
Not just a good idea
A student pro-life society is not only a good idea, it is a serious necessity, for several reasons:
-
- When a student falls pregnant at university, abortion may seem like the only option. You could be the sole voice on campus offering positive alternatives.
- Universities are hubs for intellectual debate where the very ideas that oppose life take root. Your university peers will be influential decision-makers in the world of tomorrow. You may never have a chance like this again to change hearts and minds.
- University is an incredible opportunity to develop your own knowledge of pro-life issues and the pro-life movement.
First Steps
Prepare
- Contact APS and let us know you want to start a society
- Check your student union’s website and literature to find out about society requirements (how many members do you need? When is the next application deadline?) Often Student Union websites will have a ‘starting a society’ section on their site.
Find like-minded people on campus
Invite people to your first general meeting
Build your committee and hold your first committee meeting
Connect with APS
- If you get in touch with APS, you will get access to resources such as our handbook, leadership training, and campus workshops. Your group does not need to be affiliated to your union to work with APS.
Apply for affiliation with your student union
- APS strongly recommends that you affiliate to your student union, as having official society status will give your group stature and stability as a recognised body. It may also give you:
- Access to facilities and resources.
- The chance to apply for a student union funding
- Training opportunities
- APS can provide support throughout the affiliation process.
- Some societies have been unable to affiliate with their Universities – but that does not deter them from doing great work!
Once you connect with APS, we have many more resources we can offer to help you through this process, as well as personalised support. Contact our student support officer today!
